The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Celestial Cologne landed in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. This release takes its cues from Bortnikoff's Cologne Céleste, channeling the original's uncommon character into a fresh interpretation. The ambition is clear. Take something rare and complicated, and reconstruct it for a wider audience without flattening what made the original worth chasing. On skin, the opening cuts bright and resinous, almost waxy in its density, before easing into a heart where powdery florals and warm spice settle alongside a thread of pine that gives the composition its green backbone. Hours in, the base pulls everything into a close, honeyed haze, with woods and a faint trace of moss softening the edges.
What makes this one worth paying attention to is the structural gamble. Cologne Céleste is built on beeswax and pine as much as citrus. The Dua Brand's version preserves that tension rather than defaulting to a straightforward aromatic cologne. Beeswax gives the composition a golden, slightly waxy weight that keeps the bright top notes from flying off the skin. Damask rose adds floral lift without sweetness. The mossy cedar base recalls classic chypre construction without committing to it fully. It reads like a cologne dressed in something older.
The evolution
Celestial Cologne began as an interpretation of Bortnikoff's Cologne Céleste, an unusual composition built around a beeswax and citrus architecture. The Dua Brand interpreted the original structure in 2023, rendering the beeswax, and damask rose framework at Extrait de Parfum concentration. The result preserves the collector appeal of the reference while opening the door to wearers priced out of the original's scarcity premium. The composition opens with a dense, almost candied beeswax note that reads less sweet than structural, lending the early stages a waxy, golden density. Citrus threads cut through that wax like light through stained glass, and soon a quiet green pine note slides into the heart, lending resinous depth. Damask rose enters with a soft, slightly peppery edge, grounding the brightness before the drydown folds into warm amber and a faint trail of incense.
Cultural impact
Celestial Cologne takes its cues from Bortnikoff's Cologne Céleste, a composition with an unusual structure that earned a following among fragrance enthusiasts. It offers a way into a harder-to-find composition without the original's scarcity premium. The Dua Brand's 2023 release leans on the original's structure rather than inventing a new accord family. The scent itself opens with a striking beeswax note, dense and golden, almost architectural in how it holds the early stages together.
