The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cardamom Chai arrived in 2024 through The Dua Brand, composed by Mahsam Raza. The concept behind it is direct enough: distill the sensory experience of chai into something wearable. Cardamom cuts through first, bright and almost mentholated at the edges, before the clove steps in with a drier, peppery warmth that grounds the opening. Frankincense smolders beneath both, offering a low resinous haze that suggests steam and smoke in equal measure. Then the cream arrives. Milk and vanilla dissolve the sharpness without burying it, rounding the spice into something buttery and slow, while tonka deepens the bottom with a soft, almost almond-like sweetness. What you get is a chai reimagined as perfume, built on a creamy, resinous architecture that recalls the drink without trying to recreate it.
What makes this composition interesting is how it treats chai as architecture rather than flavor. The cardamom and clove provide the peppery sting that wakes the nose, but frankincense and labdanum anchor that spice with a resinous gravity. Milk and vanilla soften the edges without turning gourmand, while tonka bean and amber build a base that behaves more like incense than dessert. The spice notes do the heavy lifting early and then bow out gracefully, leaving the resins and creamy sweetness to close the composition.
The evolution
The opening announces itself fast. Cardamom and clove land sharp, almost dry, with a frankincense smoke curling underneath. Within the first ten minutes, the milk and vanilla arrive and round the spice into something smoother, almost like the steam softening the air above a cup. The middle phase runs warm and resinous. Labdanum pulls the composition downward, giving it weight, and that gravity changes how everything else sits on skin. Tonka bean adds a sweet-woody hum that sits close, creating a base that feels both edible and architectural. As the hours pass, the clove and frankincense recede gradually, and the amber-vanilla-tonka base takes full command. That is where the fragrance lives for the rest of its wear time, a low, warm glow that develops further depth the longer it sits.
Cultural impact
Chai is a flavor that almost everyone recognizes, even wearers who have never smelled a dedicated chai fragrance. That shared reference point gives Cardamom Chai an immediate accessibility. It does not require learning a new vocabulary of notes or adjusting to an unfamiliar structure, because the drink itself supplies the context. The composition leans into that recognition while still operating as a fragrance rather than a flavored beverage, offering resinous depth and creamy warmth that go beyond what the drink provides.
