The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bottoms Up arrived in 2018 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line built around capturing the character of well-known luxury compositions. The house's approach involves studying the olfactory blueprints of high-end fragrances and recreating them in a way that broadens access. Bottoms Up follows that brief: it takes the icy, mineral-laced character of Kilian's Vodka on the Rocks and reinterprets it through The Dua Brand's own ingredient palette. The result is a composition that leans into rhubarb's tart edge and cardamom's warm bite, stripping away the luxury markup but keeping the architectural intent intact. The opening is a study in controlled friction, where the green snap of rhubarb meets the aromatic heat of cardamom and the subtle peppery lift of coriander.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between rhubarb and the warmer, more conventional base materials. Pairing rhubarb with ambroxan and oakmoss grounds that sharpness in something earthy and familiar, while coriander and cardamom keep the top from reading too green or too sweet. The sandalwood adds a warm backdrop that lets the brighter notes cut through without feeling disjointed, providing a blurred, creamy warmth that softens the mineral edge.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are all bite. Cardamom and coriander arrive with a dry, almost peppery heat, while ambroxan gives everything a mineral, skin-cool shimmer. Rhubarb surfaces quickly, not fruity-sweet but sharp, like a stalk snapped fresh. It dominates the opening phase with a tartness that borders on astringent. As the composition moves past the one-hour mark, the sharpness softens. Lily of the valley adds a faint green floral sweetness, and rose peeks through, just enough to round the edges. The rhubarb retreats but never disappears. It lingers like a memory of something sour that keeps surfacing, threading through the floral layer and keeping the composition from tipping into anything overtly sweet.
Cultural impact
Bottoms Up sits within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a series that draws from the character of well-known luxury fragrances. The composition has drawn attention for how it handles a rhubarb-forward profile, with some wearers praising the combination of rhubarb and cardamom as a compelling and unexpected pairing, and others finding the tartness too sharp or the overall direction too close to established designer work. As a composition that puts rhubarb at its center, it offers a point of entry for anyone curious about a note that rarely takes the lead in mainstream releases.
