The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Berry Rice Cake arrived in 2026 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line built around translating high-end compositions into wearable forms. The inspiration traces back to Strawberry Mochi by d'Annam, a delicate dessert-leaning scent that wrapped soft fruit around creamy, milky warmth. Perfumer Mahsam Raza took that template and rebuilt it with strawberry at the entrance, a heart of brown sugar, red bean paste, and rice, and a vanilla base that does the heavy lifting through the drydown. The result is a composition that lets each note breathe without crowding the others. Strawberry introduces itself with a ripe, almost jammy sweetness that feels more like biting into fresh fruit than swirling syrup.
The composition earns its place by refusing to oversell any single element. Strawberry opens bright but never candied, more like ripe fruit than syrup. The heart is where the fragrance does its real work, layering brown sugar's caramel warmth against red bean paste's earthy, almost savory sweetness, then threading rice through both to soften the edges. The rice note keeps the heart from reading as straight dessert. Without it, everything would tilt toward heavy sweetness, a sugar overload that loses nuance.
The evolution
The opening announces itself fast. Strawberry arrives within minutes, ripe and slightly jammy, but it doesn't hold the floor long. Within the first 20 minutes, brown sugar starts pulling the sweetness into something warmer, more cooked, less fruit-salad and more caramelizing pan. Red bean paste enters almost unnoticed, an earthy, faintly nutty undertone that grounds the sugar and keeps the composition from floating off. Rice shows up as a texture more than a scent, a milky softness that makes the whole middle phase feel like something you'd eat with chopsticks. The base is where vanilla takes over and stays. It doesn't roar. It settles. Vanilla carries the composition in a low, warm register, with traces of brown sugar still flickering underneath.
Cultural impact
Berry Rice Cake threads in rice and red bean paste to keep the sweetness textured, where a more conventional dessert composition might lean on sugar alone. The combination of brown sugar, red bean paste, and rice creates a gourmand that reads as layered rather than flat, each ingredient shaping the others. Red bean paste brings an earthy, faintly savory quality that prevents the sweetness from tipping into syrup territory. Rice contributes a milky, almost starchy softness that rounds out the caramel warmth of brown sugar.
