The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
33 Origins of Santal arrived in 2021 from The Dua Brand, released as part of the Inspired Hybrid / Dua Designer Line. This particular release takes its name and intent from that collection directly: it's a hybrid, a deliberate collision between two of the most-talked-about sandalwood compositions on the market, Santal 33 by Le Labo and Creed's Original Santal. The brand describes it as a blend that combines the essence of two renowned sandalwood-based fragrances, pulling the defining character of each into a single pour. Formulated as an Extrait de Parfum concentration, the release carries a weight and richness on the skin that comes through from the first spray.
What makes the composition worth a second look is the density of the woody and aromatic architecture. The pyramid isn't shy: sandalwood, cedarwood, Virginia cedar, iris, violet, leather, papyrus, and a full spice rack including cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, coriander, and juniper berries, all wrapped in tonka, vanilla, and amber. On skin, the opening reads cool and slightly astringent, with the iris and violet giving the sandalwood a powdery, almost mineral lift before the spices warm up.
The evolution
The opening is a bright collision. Cardamom, ginger, and coriander crack first, followed quickly by lavender and rosemary that give the first 15 minutes a clean, aromatic, almost cologne-like lift. Petitgrain adds a green edge that keeps the brightness from tipping too sweet. It's sharp enough to register across a room but not aggressive, more like walking into a room where someone's just finished pouring espresso near a stack of old leather. The first 30 minutes are the loudest phase, and for some wearers, the most polarizing, because the herbal-spice combo reads more energetic than woody. By the 45-minute mark, sandalwood starts asserting itself. The lavender recedes, the spices soften, and the composition tilts into its true register: creamy, slightly dusty, and warm. Iris and violet add a powdery softness that keeps the wood from going too dry, while papyrus and leather introduce a quiet, papery, almost book-like undertone. The base phase, which begins around the 2-hour mark, is where the vanilla, tonka, and amber do their work.
Cultural impact
33 Origins of Santal occupies a specific place in the world of sandalwood compositions, pulling from two well-known references and placing them in conversation. The release assumes a certain familiarity with the genre, delivering a composition that carries the dry, woody character of one reference and the creamy, spiced warmth of the other without separating them into distinct halves. The Extrait de Parfum concentration gives the blend a persistence on skin that keeps the sandalwood present throughout the wear, supported by a base of tonka, vanilla, and amber that extends the life of the composition well into the evening.
