The beginning
Balsam Gilead launched in 2021, the work of Onyi Ifeguni, Brand owner and Perfume maker at Tabbeau Place. The fragrance carries a 100% vegan, naturally derived formulation, built from plant-based ingredients without any animal-derived components. There is a warmth at its core that feels restorative without slipping into softness, a presence that registers the moment it lands on skin. The opening citrus carries a brightness that cuts through the resinous density waiting beneath. As the composition moves, the fir and cedar anchor everything in a dry, woody weight that refuses to disappear into the background. It is a scent designed to occupy space, to be felt as much as smelled, and the vegan, cruelty-free stance keeps the conscience as clear as the trail it leaves behind.
What makes the structure unusual is how Evernyl and Ambroxan carry the heart, both working alongside naturals rather than in opposition to them. Ifeguni layered them beneath natural jasmine, saffron, and orange at the top, then anchored the base in real Balsam Fir and cedar. The modern aromachemicals provide a smooth, steady pulse while the naturals give the composition its texture and voice. The evolution
The first minutes belong to orange and saffron, bright and slightly peppery, almost like biting into fruit with the sun still on the rind. The fir balsam moves forward through the composition, resinous and coniferous, less like a Christmas tree and more like the sap on a cut branch in late afternoon. Cedar and ambergris settle in close from there, the cedar lending a dry pencil-shave quality while the ambergris adds the faintest salt at the very edges. The drydown carries warm and woody traces, the citrus long gone but the structure intact, holding to skin with that resinous coniferous weight still readable.
