The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
X Oud arrived in 2020. The concept was clear: introduce oud into a composition that already had its own character. Let the oud walk into a room that already has personality, so it has to earn its place rather than claim it by default. The idea was to build structure first, to give the oud something to interact with rather than letting it dominate the entire composition. This approach meant creating an opening that could stand on its own, then allowing the oud to enter as a natural conclusion rather than an overwhelming presence. The composition needed to feel complete even before the oud appeared, so that when it did arrive, it felt like a revelation rather than an invasion.
The fruit and leather pairing became that structure. Blackcurrant's tartness, pineapple's brightness, and apple's crispness created an opening that felt vibrant and intentional. Smoked leather then entered the composition, a material with enough weight to bridge different elements without becoming heavy or oppressive. Oud arrived last, not as a statement but as a resolution, the moment the composition stops asking questions and starts answering them. White rum added a slight warmth underneath, a suggestion of amber without the obviousness.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes are fruity. Unapologetically so. Pineapple and apple arrive together, bright and slightly tart, like fruit left in a cool room. Blackcurrant lingers at the edges, adding depth without weight. Then the leather arrives, not heavy, not smoky exactly, but present. It doesn't fight the fruit. It just slowly takes up more space until the fruit becomes a memory rather than a feature. The oud shows itself around the hour mark, resinous and warm, and from there the composition settles into something quieter. Patchouli underneath. A ghost of white rum. The drydown is oud-forward for the next several hours, with the fruit and leather occasionally surfacing like half-remembered dreams. On fabric, it can last well into the next day, a faint, warm reminder of what was.
Cultural impact
X Oud takes a distinctive approach to oud, building the composition around fruit and leather rather than letting the oud dominate entirely. The result is a fragrance that offers oud's characteristic depth while remaining accessible and well-structured. Rather than competing with established oud fragrances, it occupies its own space, appealing to those who appreciate the ingredient but find more traditional interpretations overwhelming. The balance between sweetness, leather, and resinous wood creates something that feels both complex and composed.
