The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Soho by Superdry arrived in 2021. The perfumer Christian Plesch built this fragrance around a specific tension: the sharp and the soft, the street and the tailored. Grapefruit and black pepper open hard, crisp and lively. Then something quieter takes over. Iris. Powder. A delicate floralcy that softens the initial brightness, bringing a refined balance to the composition. The fragrance moves from its initial punch to a gentler presence, the citrus notes giving way to the powdery elegance of iris.
What makes Soho work is the Iso E Super backbone. This molecule, known for smelling like skin rather than like perfume, gives the fragrance its uncanny quality: present but not projecting, distinctive without announcing itself. Layer it with almost anything and it amplifies. Wear it alone and it reads as confident understatement. The moss and vetiver in the base ensure the drydown stays earthy and grounded, never sweet, never synthetic. The interplay between the bright opening and the woody base creates a fragrance that feels both modern and timeless.
The evolution
The opening hits quick, black pepper's crackle followed by grapefruit's tart brightness. Ten minutes in, the citrus softens and the iris emerges, powdery and calm, like the moment a busy street suddenly empties. By the second hour, the composition shifts into its woody phase: vetiver, moss, patchouli settling close to the skin. The Iso E Super extends everything, keeping the edges smooth and the sillage moderate, you'll smell yourself, the person next to you might catch a trace. The drydown lingers as a quiet skin-musk and resin warmth that wears into the next day on fabric.
Cultural impact
Soho occupies an interesting position in the fragrance landscape: accessible pricing, moderate performance, and a composition that rewards layering. The fragrance offers a credible alternative for those seeking a quality scent without niche pricing.
