The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Civette Intense exists because Sven Pritzkoleit wanted to work with civet at full throttle. Not as a footnote in the drydown, not as a trace element lending 'character', as the actual subject. The name says it all: Civette, French for civet, no translation needed. This isn't a fragrance that hints at animalic. It announces it. The green notes and moss exist to frame the civet, to give it somewhere to breathe, but make no mistake, the civet is in command.
What makes this composition work is the counterbalance. Civet on its own can tip into something feral, unwearable. The moss and green notes ground it, pull it back toward earth. Pritzkoleit's pharmaceutical background shows up here, the systematic understanding of how materials interact, how to push one element far enough without losing control entirely. The woody notes bridge the gap between raw animalic and structured base, letting the civet speak without drowning everything else out. It's a tense composition by design, and that tension is what makes it interesting.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately. No warm-up, no gentle citrus to ease you in, just musk and animalic intensity arriving together. Within the first hour, the green notes begin threading through, a mossy, slightly herbal counterweight that keeps the civet from overwhelming. The two dance for a couple of hours, neither dominating completely. Then the woody notes emerge more prominently, adding structure and moving the composition toward its drydown phase. By hour six or seven, you're in powdery amber territory, softer, closer to the skin, the civet reduced to a whisper. On fabric the next day, there's still a trace. A reminder that something wild happened here.
Cultural impact
Civette Intense occupies a specific niche in indie perfumery, a bold, animalic statement in an era of increasingly safe compositions. Its discontinuation has enhanced its appeal among collectors seeking something genuinely challenging. The fragrance represents a philosophy: that animalic notes, handled with care, can create something memorable rather than simply overwhelming.
