Why it exists.
The beginning
Nothing Burns Like the Cold launched in 2022 as part of Sorce's Winter Enchantments collection. Hayes composed it as an extrait de parfum, a concentration that allows the composition to develop slowly rather than flash and fade. The title holds a particular tension: cold air makes warmth feel sharper when it finally arrives, and the fragrance is built to reproduce that sensation on skin. Toasted rice and caramel form the center of gravity, jasmine absolute adds a breath of something living, and saffron threads cut through the sweetness with a dry, almost metallic edge. It is the kind of scent that earns its name by refusing to behave like a typical gourmand, and it earns that refusal through careful note interaction.
The toasted rice carries a starchy, almost sour edge that reads as off if the perfumer doesn't balance it, and here the balance comes through the interplay with vanilla. The trio of vanillas, CO2 extract, Bourbon vanilla, and vanilla orchid, gives the composition a layered sweetness. Each source contributes something different: the CO2 extract brings a clean, concentrated sweetness, the Bourbon vanilla carries a deeper, almost boozy warmth, and the vanilla orchid adds a green, slightly creamy facet. This layering avoids the flat syrup feel single-source vanilla can produce.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are a standoff. Toasted rice hits sharp, almost fermented, the way actual grains smell when they're crisping at the bottom of a hot pot. Saffron threads in next, dry and a little metallic, the kind of heat that registers as color before it registers as spice. Bourbon vanilla and caramel start softening the edges within the hour, but they don't take over. The jasmine absolute surfaces around the two-hour mark, unexpectedly, carrying an indolic warmth that makes the sweetness feel alive rather than static. By hour three the composition has settled into something quieter. The rice note has faded, the saffron has pulled back to a whisper, and the vanillas and caramel carry the weight on their own. What remains is warm and golden, still sweet but grounded, and it holds close to the skin rather than projecting outward.
