The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Heia means 'heatland', the word for Norway's high, exposed fells where hardy shrubs and wild herbs make their home. Skandinavisk built the fragrance around four materials native to those elevations: heather, bearberry, plant sap, and thyme. The result opens with a clear, green brightness, the snap of fresh plant sap as it breaks from stem, bright and almost mineral in its clarity. Heather contributes a subtle purple sweetness, not floral in the traditional sense but more like the distant haze of moorland seen across a valley. Bearberry adds a faint, tart berry quality that grounds the composition without introducing overt fruitiness. Thyme survives at altitude rather than thriving, and here it lends an herbal practicality, slightly camphoraceous, resilient, quietly aromatic.
What's unusual here is restraint. Four notes. No construction padding, no oriental base to soften the edges. The sourness from bearberry keeps the sweetness honest, and the green notes don't disappear, they persist. For a fragrance built on open landscape, Heia mirrors that honesty: the materials say what they are, and nothing covers it up.
The evolution
Heather arrives first, bright and purple-spoken. Within minutes the green sap emerges, fresh-cut stem, slight medicinal edge, and thyme joins, aromatic and herbal. The bearberry sits underneath, lending a tartness that stops the whole thing from floating away. By the third hour the heather softens, the herbal character deepens, and what remains is close to skin: green, warm, lasting through an evening without announcing itself. Moderate sillage throughout. On clothes, the plant sap note lingers into the next day.
Cultural impact
Heia is a niche fragrance built on Nordic botanicals, heather, bearberry, plant sap, and thyme, selected for their presence in the high, exposed landscapes of Norway. The composition offers an honest green and herbal character that diverges from mainstream floral fragrances, delivering instead the austere, windswept quality of hardy mountain vegetation. Each perfume oil in the Skandinavisk collection takes its name from a Nordic place or concept, and Heia specifically captures the specific corner of the market where landscape and fragrance intersect.
