The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Voulez Vous arrived in 2018 from Shay & Blue London, a house known for letting its compositions do the quiet talking. The nose behind it is Julie Massé, a perfumer whose work tends to live in the space between comfort and surprise. The fragrance itself reads less like a come-on and more like a question asked in passing, the kind that hangs in the air after someone's already left the room. Voulez Vous slots into the catalogue without breaking stride. It's not trying to seduce the entire block. It wants to be noticed by one person, in a specific moment, over a specific cup of something warm. There's a particular kind of confidence in that: the restraint of a composition that doesn't need to announce itself, that trusts the wearer to carry it rather than perform with it.
The composition is built around a tension that's worth examining. Coffee, a note that usually anchors bold, gourmand, or masculine-coded launches, is paired here with white flowers and vanilla. That combination could easily tip into something heavy-handed or saccharine. What keeps Voulez Vous on the right side of the line is the proportion: the coffee reads more like the memory of espresso than the beverage itself, and the florals stay pale rather than indolic. It's a short pyramid, which means every note has to earn its place.
The evolution
The opening is sharp and immediate. Coffee, but not the burnt dark-roast kind. More like a double espresso pulled forty minutes ago, still carrying that warm-bitter edge but starting to mellow. There's no citrus lift or green stem to cut through it. The white flowers arrive almost immediately, sliding underneath the caffeine like cream into a cup. Magnolia, mostly, though it stays soft rather than lemony or soapy. Within the first twenty minutes, the whole thing settles into a creamy, slightly sweet register. The coffee doesn't disappear. It just stops being the loudest voice. By the two-hour mark, the vanilla has taken over. Not the heavy, custard-style vanilla of a dessert fragrance. A cleaner, almost skin-warm vanilla that reads more like fabric softener and less like a bakery.
Cultural impact
Voulez Vous has drawn comparisons to Black Opium since its 2018 launch, and the resemblance sits in plain view. Both build on a coffee-vanilla skeleton. Where Voulez Vous diverges is in restraint: less gourmand sweetness, less projection, more of a close-skin reading. It appeals to wearers who want the coffee-floral idea without the nightclub volume, the kind of person who values subtlety over statement. The fragrance has carved out a quiet corner for itself in a category that often prizes boldness.
