The beginning
Racing Orange was born in 2017 from a specific obsession: translating a vivid chromatic concept into something wearable. The Sergio Scaglietti fragrance house, founded that same year, opened with Racing Orange as part of its initial creative statement. The fragrance draws its inspiration directly from the colour orange as captured in Italian motorsport, an intense red-orange that became inseparable from the visual identity of competition on track. The perfume translates that visual intensity into scent: racy, hot, what the brand calls sensual and enveloping, with a palette drawn from what the founders describe as the fiery notes and colours of the Orient.
What's interesting here is the Italian choice to chase an Oriental warmth through specifically Southern Indian materials. Black pepper from Mangalore meets Sicilian orange at the top, a deliberate East-meets-Sicily collision. The heart pairs palisander rosewood with saffron, both materials that carry gravity without heaviness. The saffron contributes a leathery, almost bitter edge, while the rosewood lends a polished grain, the kind of woody smoothness that feels architectural rather than rustic.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are all kinetic energy. Sicilian orange hits bright and sharp, cut immediately by the dry heat of black pepper. There's a sportiness to it, almost bracing, the kind of opening that announces itself with intention rather than apology. Then the saffron starts threading through the citrus, and the rosewood underneath gives it a polished wooden interior, the scent of turned lumber rather than raw timber. By the one-hour mark, the benzoin has taken over. The orange hasn't disappeared, it's been folded into something warmer, almost like marmalade that's been caramelised. The Bourbon vanilla softens every edge, smoothing the resin into something that feels draped rather than applied. The Indian patchouli arrives last, grounding everything with a dry earthiness that keeps the sweetness from tipping.

Racing Orange occupies a specific niche in contemporary Italian perfumery: it's a citrus-driven composition that refuses to behave like one.
