Why it exists.
The beginning
Scent Hunters released Hello Darkness in 2023, the work of perfumer Olaf Larsen, and the name does exactly what it promises. This is a chypre that leans into shadow without abandoning its florals. Patchouli and labdanum ground the composition while rose and jasmine thread through the darkness rather than sitting bright on top of it. Bergamot opens with citrus lift before the whole structure settles into something smoky and resinous. Familiar chypre elements show up throughout, but they're arranged toward the moody end of the spectrum, giving the fragrance a weight and gravity that pulls you in close from the first spray.
What makes the composition interesting is how many chypre pillars show up without the genre feeling heavy. Patchouli and labdanum ground it, papyrus adds a dry, fibrous texture, and guaiac wood brings the smoke. The rose and jasmine don't float above all that, they get pulled through it, taking on resinous and earthy edges as they mingle with the base. Bergamot and geranium keep the structure breathing in the early stages, opening windows of brightness before the woods close back in. Every element earns its place, working in layered conversation rather than competing for attention.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost conversational. Bergamot cuts in bright, saffron warms the back of the throat, and clove sits just behind the florals like a suggestion you can't quite place. Around the half-hour mark, the chypre architecture locks in. Labdanum and patchouli take over the floor, papyrus rises with its dry, papery character, and the rose shifts from fresh to something more resinous, stained by the base notes around it. By hour three the guaiac wood and vetiver have settled the whole thing into a low, smoky close that feels rooted and grounded. The musk underneath never really leaves, threading through every phase and keeping the drydown close to skin. The saffron lingers longer than expected, lending a leathery warmth to the later stages that ties the smoke and the florals together in an unexpected way.

Hello Darkness arrives as a chypre that takes its genre seriously, weighing in with patchouli, labdanum, papyrus, and guaiac wood at its core.
