The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pervertea landed in 2023 from Soïzic Beaucourt. Her composition centers on maté absolute, that earthy, smoky tea note carrying a roasted, hay-like warmth that sits somewhere between brewed yerba mate and smoldering embers. The maté acts as the gravitational core of the composition, less a beverage recall than an atmosphere, pulling the surrounding notes toward something ground-level and elemental. Around it, Beaucourt builds with oud, vetiver, grapefruit, bergamot, and a stack of spices that add friction and edge. Cedarwood and papyrus lend a papery depth underneath, while frankincense and ambergris keep the whole thing tethered to the skin.
What makes Pervertea structurally interesting is the maté-oud-vetiver axis running underneath a bright citrus-spice top. The maté carries a tannic, almost bitter-green quality that anchors the composition, then vetiver and guaiac wood reinforce that earthy register for depth. Sichuan pepper and black pepper crack against the citrus, adding a buzzing spice that pushes everything forward.
The evolution
The opening gives itself over to grapefruit and bergamot, bright enough to announce arrival without waiting for permission. Lemon and coriander add lift while Sichuan pepper snaps at the edges of the citrus, introducing a buzz that keeps the top from reading as merely clean. Then the maté arrives, and the whole thing tilts. Citrus retreats, hanging around the periphery in soft traces, while maté, guaiac, and vetiver take over the center of gravity. Cedarwood and papyrus settle in underneath, giving the drydown a papery, almost library-like quality, the kind of quiet that happens halfway through a long afternoon. Oud is present throughout but never loud, more a shadow than a statement, lending the composition a gravity it can't quite explain on its own.
Cultural impact
Pervertea offers something that rewards curiosity and punishes indecision. The maté-led approach puts the composition in dialogue with a broader interest in unconventional lead materials within indie perfumery, and the willingness to build an entire structure around a single, less-common note positions it as a point of reference for anyone tracking where niche composition is heading. It sits comfortably in the bracket of scents that demand attention without shouting, and its longevity and sillage give it presence well beyond the first hour of wear.
