The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Undergrowth began as an exploration of garden mint in its truest form, the kind you pull from the soil with roots still attached. Nadeem Crowe built this 2020 composition around that moment of contact, translating the damp earth and wild herbaceousness of the garden into something wearable. The fragrance captures the cool, sharp green of freshly torn mint leaves, paired with the bristling texture of crushed grass stems. There's a natural sweetness beneath the green that never feels processed or synthetic. It doesn't try to improve on nature. It just holds it close, preserving that connection between scent and soil.
What makes this structure interesting is how the mint and grass refuse to separate. Undergrowth keeps them together from start to finish, held in place by a mandarin orange that adds a quiet brightness without ever becoming sweet. The composition moves through phases where each element holds its ground, neither overwhelming nor disappearing entirely. There's a literal earthiness present throughout, rooted and grounded in a way that goes beyond metaphorical description. The green herbs maintain their presence alongside the citrus, creating a fragrance that feels complete and unyielding.
The evolution
The opening arrives immediately with mint and grass together, cool, sharp, and alive. The combination strikes with an immediate freshness that feels both crisp and substantial. The mandarin orange arrives shortly after, a brief flash of citrus that keeps the green from becoming harsh or one-dimensional. As the composition develops, a rich earthy quality emerges, and that's the turning point. This is where Undergrowth moves beyond simple freshness into something more grounded. The green notes begin to recede but never fully disappear, maintaining their presence throughout the wear. As time passes, vetiver and patchouli come forward, adding a dry woody warmth that balances the initial sharpness. The white musk keeps everything close to the skin, a soft foundation that anchors the brighter top notes.
Cultural impact
Undergrowth arrived as part of a broader movement toward naturalistic perfumery, with consumers seeking fragrances that capture botanical accuracy rather than metaphorical interpretations. Rook Perfumes crafted this scent with an emphasis on ingredient purity, creating a composition that reflects the green-earthy character of its botanical inspiration. The 2020 launch brought increased attention to nature-inspired fragrance creation, with an emphasis on authenticity in how raw materials are translated into scent.
