The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Puma launched I'm Going Woman in 2007 alongside its masculine counterpart, I'm Going Man. The naming convention carried intention: the verb, the continuous present, the sense of someone already in motion. Rather than a place or a memory, this fragrance took its identity from action itself. The I'm Going line represented a step toward something more specific: a scent for the active, the purposeful, the person who has somewhere to be. Earlier Puma fragrances established the brand's fragrance territory, and the I'm Going line built upon that foundation, pushing toward a more defined identity that centered on the energy of movement and daily momentum rather than static impression.
The structure earns attention in its restraint. Four top notes could easily become a cluttered mess, but blackcurrant, pineapple, pear, and tangerine share territory without crowding each other. Blackcurrant brings the tart berry edge. Pineapple adds tropical weight without going creamy. Pear introduces softness, and tangerine lifts the whole opening into something sparkling. The combination avoids the artificial candy-note trap that plagued many fruity fragrances of the era. The heart is where the composition softens. Rose anchors the center, but frangipani, freesia, and jasmine complicate it. Frangipani brings a creamy, exotic quality that connects the tropical opening to the floral heart.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately. Tangerine sparks first, joined within seconds by blackcurrant and pineapple. The effect is bright and sparkling, like citrus soda opened in a sunlit room. Pear arrives softer, threading sweetness through the tartness. This phase reads as youthful energy in liquid form. The citrus fades after twenty to thirty minutes, and the tropical notes begin their slow exit. Pineapple holds longest among the top notes, but it too surrenders as the heart takes over. The floral phase arrives with rose and frangipani blending into something creamy and warm. Freesia adds a clean counterpoint, preventing the heart from going too heavy. Jasmine sits quietly underneath, providing body without taking over. The drydown begins around the two-hour mark. The florals thin, and what's left is a soft, powdery rose that stays close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Puma I'm Going Woman exists as part of a tradition of fruity-floral mass-market fragrances designed for daily wear rather than special occasions. The fragrance fits squarely in that tradition: accessible, pleasant, and easy to incorporate into an everyday routine. Its name carried a certain attitude: forward motion, purpose, optimism about the next step. The verb tense suggested someone already engaged with their day, moving through tasks and interactions with intention.
