The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cauldron of Morning was composed by Joelle Nealy in 2019, part of Poesie's Poetic Light collection. Each fragrance in the house begins with a brief centered on a female figure, real or imagined, and this one draws its portrait from Sylvia Plath. Not the confessional poet of bell jar reckoning, but the other Sylvia: the one in red shoes, the one who chose Marilyn Monroe as fairy godmother, the one who treated glamour as its own form of defiance. Nealy's composition translates that tension into a cauldron of sweetness sharpened by a thread of darkness. Powdery marshmallow floats above ripe plum and blood orange, while licorice winds underneath like the unsaid line in a poem you keep returning to.
The composition's most interesting move is structural. Cauldron of Morning does something unusual with its sweetness. It lets the marshmallow remain suspended, almost intangible, while green rose and gardenia give the floral layer an unexpected coolness that keeps the sugar from collapsing into cloying. The mahogany at the bookends provides warmth without weight. The licorice is the real architectural decision: a bittersweet, almost medicinal thread that prevents the whole thing from tipping into dessert territory.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with blood orange and plum in quick succession, their juice and tartness arriving almost simultaneously. The marshmallow doesn't arrive so much as materialize, a soft, powdery sweetness that settles over the fruit without masking it. Licorice threads through from the start, dark and slightly bitter, preventing the opening from reading as pure candy. As the composition settles, gardenia and rose begin to surface, lending a cool, almost vintage creaminess to the heart. The marshmallow gains dimension here, less sugar and more suede, taking on a softness that feels less edible and more textile. The florals gradually recede, leaving the marshmallow-plum-licorice combination suspended over the wood. The mahogany emerges quietly, a warmth at the base that gives the drydown gravity and anchors the sweeter notes so they don't float away.
Cultural impact
Cauldron of Morning sits within Poesie's Poetic Light collection, a 2019 release. The Plath inspiration gives the fragrance a particular weight, situating it within a body of work that draws on literary women as creative anchors. Wearers who connect with the Sylvia Plath of glamour rather than the confessional poet will find this speaks their language, the marshmallow and blood orange suggesting something polished and photographed rather than raw and unmediated.
