Why it exists.
The beginning
Guilty As Charged arrived in 2025 from Outsider Parfum, a house releasing compositions through perfumer Aichi Liu. The name carries a confession baked in. There's something being admitted here, something between the lines. Liu builds the fragrance around that tension, a leather composition that knows exactly what it's doing and refuses to look away from it. The opening offers bergamot and neroli bright against the darker notes that follow, a deliberate contrast that sets up the entire wear. Pine and saffron arrive close behind, the pine resinous and clean, the saffron warm and almost waxy in how it clings to the leather underneath.
The choice to anchor a leather in saffron, pine, and an "air accord" rather than smoke or tobacco is what separates this from the genre's usual playbook. The air accord, that unusual structural choice, creates space for the bergamot and neroli to register as atmosphere rather than garnish. Angelica root and cashmeran do the bridging work, earthy enough to ground the brightness, soft enough to keep the leather from turning aggressive.
The evolution
The opening strikes with pine and bergamot, saffron threading underneath warm and leathery in a way that suggests the base before it arrives. The citrus presence is assertive, sharp enough to cut through the denser materials that follow, clean enough to read as almost atmospheric. Cedarwood and Atlas cedar start to claim territory as the composition settles, the leather softening from something you smell to something you feel. Cashmeran and patchouli settle into the mid-phase, creating a dry, almost suede-like texture that reads as skin-adjacent rather than applied. The drydown reveals the soil note, which carries a wet, petrichor-like quality without tipping into anything literal. It's an earthy dampness, suggestive rather than descriptive. Oakmoss and vetiver deepen the base, leaving a composed trail that lingers.

That image holds a particular tension, something treated and polished rather than rough or barnacled.
