Why it exists.
The beginning
Dragon's Breath arrived in 2026 as part of Outsider Parfum's Mythical Creatures collection, and the name does exactly what it promises. Perfumer Aichi Liu built a composition around heat, lava as a concept, the geological moment before something ignites. The brief was elemental: capture the air around fire, the smoke and mineral residue it leaves on skin and fabric, and Liu approaches it with the patience of someone watching magma cool rather than someone trying to recreate a bonfire. The scent opens with a rush of warm mineral vapor, something that reads less like a traditional perfume and more like leaning over a vent in the earth where the rocks are just beginning to glow.
Liu's note structure does something unusual with the oakmoss, birch tar, and lava accord. The mineral character is threaded through the entire composition, re-emerging in the drydown as scorched-earth texture beneath the cocoa and vanilla. The turmeric CO2 adds a bitter, root-like heat that keeps the sweetness honest, lending a savory edge that stops the gourmand elements from collapsing into dessert territory. Shiso leaf does the heavy lifting in the green register, sharp and herbaceous, giving the composition a leafy bite that contrasts with the scorched and mineral elements around it.
The evolution
The first minutes after application are a steam room. Hot iron notes press against the skin, cocoa resinoid rising like vapor off simmering water, something mineral underneath that reads as wet stone pulled fresh from a riverbed. The opening is dense and humid, almost oppressive in its warmth, but it rewards patience. The birch tar begins to surface, dragging the composition toward campfire embers, and the turmeric adds a rooty bitterness that keeps everything from going too sweet. The shiso leaf arrives with a sharp, green clarity, alive in a way that surprises given how scorched everything else feels, like a weed pushing through cracked earth after a fire. As the hours pass, the vanilla and oakmoss settle the composition into something quieter, warmer, still volcanic but more introspective, the kind of scent that sits close to the body and asks for attention rather than demanding it.
