The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Orange arrived in 2017 as part of Our Modern Lives' colour-coded collection, each scent meant to echo a specific mood. Perfumer Sarah McCartney, drawing on her two-decade yoga practice, set out to capture the calm that settles after a sun-lit session. The colour orange, associated with warmth and openness, guided her material choices toward ingredients that embody those qualities without resorting to the expected citrus explosion.
The note selection for Orange reflects a philosophy of warmth without excess. Cacao pod was chosen for its bitter-sweet depth rather than milk chocolate sweetness. Cyclopia (honeybush) brings a honey-tea quality that pairs naturally with vanilla. Cedarwood grounds the composition, ensuring that even at its peak sweetness, Orange retains an earthy, grounded character that aligns with the calm, settled mood McCartney sought to capture.
The evolution
The journey of Orange begins the moment it touches skin, where neroli and peach create a brief, bright introduction before the deeper heart materials take over. Cacao pod and vanilla emerge within minutes, their warm, edible character becoming the focal point. Cyclopia adds its honeyed, slightly tannic quality, while rose geranium introduces a green-floral nuance that keeps the sweetness from overwhelming. Bran provides an earthy counterweight, and cedarwood gradually becomes perceptible, lending structure. By the final hours, cedarwood and vanilla persist as the last detectable notes, their warmth fading quietly into the skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 launch, Orange has found a niche in yoga studios and mindfulness works hops, where instructors cite its calming citrus‑floral aura as a subtle cue for relaxation. Wellness retailers often display it alongside the brand’s other colour‑coded scents, positioning it as the ‘sunset’ companion that bridges the energetic flow of a practice with a soothing cool‑down. Wearers report it feels like a quiet breath of optimism in otherwise busy days.
