Why it exists.
The beginning
Woody launched in 2019, composed by Olivia da Costa as part of Olfactive O's collection of scent personalities. Each fragrance in the independent British house's line corresponds to a character, a Second Skin meant to mirror the wearer rather than serve a momentary mood. Woody is described by the brand as the quiet one: not the floral, not the gourmand, not the skin scent that disappears into you. The curious mind. The subtle presence. The one who treads lightly and reveals itself slowly. There's a hush to the opening, where the woods feel close and damp rather than sharp or resinous. As the hours pass, the composition settles into something warmer and more lived-in, the kind of fragrance that doesn't announce itself but rewards attention. It doesn't perform intimacy.
The structure is unusually tight for something so atmospheric. Just two top notes. Just three in the heart. Just three at the base. No decorative filler, no sparkle notes meant to seduce a first impression. Black pepper and cedar open the door. Leather, myrrh, and vetiver move through the middle like a slow conversation. Labdanum, sandalwood, and white ambergris settle the floor. What makes the composition interesting is the restraint: every material here is a heavyweight, and the perfumer let them argue without padding the debate.
The evolution
The first ten minutes feel almost architectural. Black pepper lands sharp and immediate, but cedar catches it before it scatters, and the two form a single dry, aromatic line that sits close to the skin. There's nothing bright or fruity to soften the entry. Within twenty minutes, the pepper recedes and leather arrives, not new leather, more like a jacket that's been folded in a drawer for a season. Myrrh threads through it with a resinous hush. Vetiver grounds the whole middle phase with something cool and earthy underneath. By the second hour, the fragrance has quietly handed itself over to the base. Labdanum warms the leather. Sandalwood smooths the vetiver. White ambergris settles everything into a soft, slightly animal skin-close finish that lasts well past the six-hour mark. The next morning, on fabric, what remains is sandalwood and a faint trace of myrrh. Warm. Unhurried. Still there.
