The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Floridita's Night takes its name from El Floridita, the legendary bar in Havana where Ernest Hemingway spent his evenings. The connection is direct: this is a fragrance that smells like a particular place, a particular ritual, the hour when the light drops and conversation becomes something else. Perfumer Clément Marx built a composition where the materials do the work. It's a scent that captures an atmosphere without needing to explain itself, inviting the wearer into a world of warmth, complexity, and the quiet drama of an evening spent in good company.
What makes this structure interesting is how the heart manages two contradictory pulls. The Cuban cigar leaf is dry, almost austere, the kind of tobacco that reads sour and powdery on some skin. The rum element in the composition offers a bittersweet sweetness that balances against that austerity. They're opposing forces held in suspension. Myrrh anchors the middle with a smoky resinous quality that prevents the composition from tipping into something too sweet or too sharp. It's an unlikely balance that somehow holds, creating a tension that keeps the fragrance dynamic and alive on the skin.
The evolution
The Ceylon cardamom opens the composition, followed by the Ceylon cinnamon as it settles in, warm and persistent, while the Cuban cigar leaf takes command of the heart. This is where the fragrance earns its name. The rum element brings a sweetness that flirts with the tobacco without surrendering to it. Myrrh deepens everything into resin, adding layers of warmth and complexity. The drydown belongs to tonka and patchouli, sweet, earthy, warm, before papyrus and vetiver arrive to close things out close to the skin. There's a depth here that rewards patience, as the fragrance unfolds over time, revealing new facets with each passing hour.
Cultural impact
Floridita's Night combines Ceylon spices with tobacco and rum, notes that evoke nostalgia, craftsmanship, and old-world indulgence. The fragrance embraces richness and darkness, with a projection that announces your presence. It's a composition that favors boldness over restraint, complexity over simplicity, and the kind of depth that invites exploration rather than immediate comprehension. This is a scent for those who appreciate the drama of fragrance, the way a well-crafted perfume can transform an evening into something memorable.
