The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cyrill Rolland designed Unique Wood with the "Boy in the bush" as a central inspiration, raw, natural, slightly unknown territory. In Rolland's hands, this concept becomes a composition that starts herbal and ends warm. The fragrance opens with crisp lavender, bringing an aromatic clarity that feels both immediate and inviting. As it develops, the herbal notes gradually soften, making way for a warm, grounded drydown that lingers pleasantly without overwhelming. The overall effect is one of quiet naturalness, a scent that feels connected to something untamed while remaining approachable and wearable throughout the day.
The pepper choice here is deliberate and dual. Pink pepper opens, berry-adjacent, soft-edged, while Sichuan pepper and black pepper form the heart, building warmth without heat. The violet leaf adds a quiet green undertone that prevents the whole thing from becoming flat. At the base, amberwood functions as a modern fixative: something synthetic-derived that reads as clean wood. Combined with tonka bean's coumarin sweetness and vanilla's warmth, the drydown creates a soft, woody cloud that settles into the skin with a gentle, intimate presence.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly, lavender and geranium arriving together, herbal and green, softened immediately by pink pepper's subtle warmth. The heart develops with Sichuan pepper and black pepper building gentle heat, while violet leaf keeps the composition grounded. The transition is gradual: the lavender recedes, the warmth remains and deepens, becoming rounder and less sharp. As the fragrance develops, amberwood settles as the dominant impression, clean, modern, faintly sweet. Vanilla and tonka emerge slowly, creating a drydown that reads as warm skin rather than applied fragrance. The composition eventually fades to a quiet warmth that remains detectable at close range, and on fabric the vanilla notes leave a soft, sweet echo that lingers.
Cultural impact
Unique Wood presents a distinctive approach to woody-aromatic composition. The lavender-pepper opening establishes an aromatic character, while the amberwood-vanilla drydown creates a warm, approachable finish. Some wearers find the amberwood implementation clean and modern, while others may perceive it differently based on their preferences. The fragrance occupies a space that encourages everyday wear, offering a quiet confidence rather than dramatic presence. Its position in the Novellista catalog reflects the brand's broader commitment to literary-inspired perfumery, with this scent serving as an early exploration of these themes.
