The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Turquoise arrived in October 2016 as a limited edition reimagining of the original Michael Kors fragrance from 2004. The name references that particular shade of blue, the color of clear shallow water, of resort living, of the moment before diving in. The brand positioned it as the fragrance of natural freshness with a modern edge, both intimate and invigorating. Turquoise leads with aquatic freshness, letting warmth emerge later, closer to the skin. The composition builds from cool, sparkling top notes into a warmer floral heart, then settles into a mineral, skin-close base. It's a reinterpretation that keeps the brand's identity intact while offering something distinctly different.
The fleur de sel accord is the structural choice here. Michael Kors built the base around a marine salt note, the kind you smell when waves retreat from warm stone. That mineral quality shifts the fragrance away from sunscreen and toward something more elemental. Combined with the cool snap of cucumber and lime opening, then the unexpected warmth of jasmine and wild orchid arriving in the heart, the composition creates a temperature contrast: cool entry, warm middle, intimate close.
The evolution
The opening hits quickly, cucumber's green snap arrives first, almost startling in its clarity, followed immediately by lime's brightness and water lily's stillness. The combination reads like the first moment of a dive: clean, cool, awake. As the fragrance develops, the heart begins to emerge. Jasmine and wild orchid don't crash in, they arrive gradually, softening the aquatic structure into something warmer, more intimate. The top notes don't disappear so much as they blur, merging with the floral heart until you can't quite separate them anymore. The base takes over as the wear continues: musk, cedar, and that marine salt accord settling close to the skin. The sillage becomes intimate, this is a fragrance you have to lean in to smell. What surprises is the quiet, close presence that lingers, with the cedar and ambroxan lingering longest, almost a whisper by the end.
Cultural impact
Turquoise fits into the aquatic-fresh category, distinguishing itself through the salt accord and the warm floral heart. The limited edition status gives it a certain exclusivity. Turquoise offers freshness without being fleeting, warm without being heavy. The composition works equally well in warm weather or cooler environments, appealing to the woman who wants something she can reach for daily without thinking twice. The balance of aquatic freshness and mineral depth creates a versatile scent that adapts to different settings while maintaining its core character.
