The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lalibela is a city in Ethiopia, sitting at over 2,500 meters elevation. According to legend, angels descended to build its twelve rock-hewn churches in a single night during the 12th century. That image, sacred elevation, divine intervention, warmth rising into cold air, became the brief for this fragrance. Memo Paris translated Lalibela into scent using rose, frankincense, and patchouli as ingredients, each one a small continuation of the city's mystical identity. Alienor Massenet composed it as a limited edition in 2013. Not every stop on the Memo Paris journey is long. Some are brief and extraordinary. Lalibela is both.
What sets Lalibela Oud apart is its unusual bridge between the delicate and the dense. Coconut orchid is not a typical entry point for a fragrance built on oud and incense, it brings softness, a hint of tropical sweetness that could easily tip into gourmand territory. Massenet prevents that by placing the oud, frankincense, and tobacco in the base rather than letting them dominate early. The result is a progression that feels earned: bright opening, deepening heart, then the warm resinous foundation arriving steadily, not all at once. Vanilla and patchouli extend the drydown without overwhelming it.
The evolution
The opening announces coconut orchid and jasmine together, a creamy tropical note softened by white florals. No sharp transition. The rose arrives within the first minutes, amplifying the sweetness without competing. The coconut stays present through the heart, which is unusual, typically a top note recedes once the heart develops. Here it lingers, keeping the jasmine and rose from turning heavy. Then the base begins its slow arrival: tobacco first, then oud and frankincense arriving concurrently, bringing resin and depth. The vanilla doesn't appear immediately but extends the drydown once everything else settles. By hour three, the fragrance is primarily vanilla, patchouli, and oud, warm, slightly smoky, intimate. The oud stays quiet throughout, supporting rather than dominating.
Cultural impact
Lalibela Oud occupies a distinctive position in the Memo Paris collection, a fragrance that blends warm florals with deep Oriental base notes, appealing to wearers drawn to oud, vanilla, and tobacco. The composition strikes a balance between sweet-floral opening and resinous staying power, making it a memorable choice for those who appreciate sweet-floral compositions with lasting depth. Its warm, slightly smoky drydown offers an intimate character that lingers on skin and fabric alike.
