The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
By 2009, Marc Ecko wanted something new. Working with perfumers Vincent Kuczinski and Lois Evans from Ungerer & Co, he created his first scent. The fragrance opens with bright citrus that hits immediately, then settles into a warm spiced heart where the notes mingle and deepen. Over the next several hours on skin, the dry down reveals a smooth, lingering base that clings without overwhelming. Each layer feels intentional, building on the one before it, so the scent reads as cohesive rather than scattered. It's the kind of fragrance that invites you to notice it again later in the day, when the original impression has softened into something quieter and more personal.
What makes Ecko distinctive is the way it refuses a single lane. The citrus top reads clean and energetic. The heart introduces black licorice alongside violet leaf and artemisia, a combination that leans herbal and slightly medicinal without tipping into clinical. It's the kind of structure that signals 'I know what I'm doing' without needing to shout it. The result is a fragrance that bridges casual and considered, daily-wear energy with enough complexity to reward attention.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast, ginger's spice followed immediately by grapefruit's tart bite. It reads caffeinated, exactly as Marc described wanting. Thirty minutes in, the citrus softens and the heart notes emerge: violet leaf brings a fresh-cut grass quality while black licorice adds a subtle sweetness that lingers just beneath. The artemisia keeps things grounded, herbal, slightly bitter. By hour two, the base takes over, musk and tonka bean create a warm, powdery drydown that settles close to the skin. Incense adds a whisper of something smoky, but never heavy. The sillage stays personal, it accompanies you through the day without announcing itself to the whole room.
Cultural impact
Released in October 2009, Ecko brought something different to the men's fragrance landscape. The composition balances bright citrus top notes with a nuanced heart that gives the scent depth and character. The opening feels clean and energetic, but as it develops on skin, the heart notes emerge and the fragrance takes on more complexity. The dry down is smooth and persistent, offering a scent that lingers without announcing itself too loudly. For someone tired of predictable fragrance choices, this offered a reason to pause and reconsider what a men's scent could do.
