The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Limed dropped from MadHat Scents in 2014, a limited release that's become quietly sought after. The name does what it says: lime, front and center, unapologetic about its brightness. But the composition reaches far beyond a simple citrus splash. Three distinct sandalwood varieties form the structural backbone, sourced from Australia, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu. Each brings its own grain to the wood. Mysore sandalwood adds density and that almost-but-not-quite sweetness. Frankincense and vanilla hold the bridge between the sharp opening and the creamy, grounded close. It's a citrus gourmand that refuses to behave like one.
What makes Limed unusual isn't any single ingredient. It's the decision to triple down on sandalwood while leading with lime. Most citrus fragrances stay thin and fleeting. This one builds a muscular wooden chassis underneath that citrus snap, giving the whole thing gravitational pull. The coconut adds a tropical milkiness without veering into sunscreen territory. The ginger stays clean and sharp rather than turning hot. Every choice pulls toward a specific kind of balance: bright enough to wake you up, grounded enough to wear through an afternoon.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all lime and ginger, sharp and almost effervescent, like biting into the fruit with a trace of root spice on your tongue. Roman chamomile softens the edges just enough to keep it from feeling like a cleaning product, lending a subtle herbaceous warmth that bridges the bright top with what comes next. Then the sandalwoods arrive, and this is where Limed stops being a citrus fragrance and becomes something stranger and more interesting. The Mysore variety brings a dense, almost creamy warmth. The Australian and New Caledonian additions add drier, woodier facets, each pulling the composition in a slightly different direction. Coconut wraps around the whole middle act like humidity, softening the transitions between the sharper citrus and the heavier wood.
Cultural impact
Limed sits comfortably within the niche conversation around how citrus can be transformed through layering with heavier, more resinous materials. The composition pulls together bright lime, spiced ginger, Roman chamomile, coconut, frankincense, vanilla, and a trio of sandalwood varieties sourced from Mysore, Australia, and New Caledonia. That multi-origin sandalwood blend is one of the more distinctive choices in the formula, combining Mysore, Australian, and New Caledonian varieties rather than relying on a single source.
