The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lady Castagnette In White arrived in 2011, when perfumer Raphaël Haury was deep in his collaboration with the Lulu Castagnette house. Haury reached for pear and mint, combining them in a composition that immediately catches attention. The crisp fruit and cooling herb play against each other in the opening moments. The name said In White: clean, bright, uncomplicated. The juice delivered something more interesting: a study in contrast that held together because nothing was trying too hard. The balance between these two notes creates something that feels both fresh and intentional, a combination that avoids the obvious while remaining accessible.
The mint opens sharp and herbal, the kind of freshness that wakes you up rather than perfumes you. The pear arrives alongside it, juicy and rounded, with a characteristic crispness that makes your mouth water. Together they create an accord that blends cool and sweet, green and fruity, which is harder to achieve than it sounds. The jasmine that follows adds warmth to the composition. The peach keeps things soft. By the time the sandalwood arrives, the fragrance has developed with a depth that rewards wearing it for several hours.
The evolution
The opening moments belong to the mint. It hits bright and herbal, like crushed leaves on your wrist. The pear arrives, sweeter and rounder, adding a juicy contrast to the mint's sharpness. This phase emphasizes freshness, the kind that makes you think of cold glasses, morning light, sheets hung out to dry. The heart materializes as the top notes begin to settle. Jasmine steps forward, but it is not the heavy floral of vintage perfumery. This is modern and gentle, soft petals, not potpourri. The mint does not disappear entirely; it recedes, becoming a cooling presence that keeps the florals from going too sweet. The drydown brings sandalwood forward, a creamy woody base that anchors the entire composition. The fragrance evolves from its bright opening into something more substantial while remaining recognizably itself.
Cultural impact
Lady Castagnette In White arrived during a period when accessible fashion fragrances were growing in popularity. The mint-pear combination stood out from many of the heavier, sweeter compositions available at the time. The fragrance offered something lighter and more playful in a market where bold scents often dominated. Its positioning made it approachable for fragrance wearers who wanted quality scent without an intimidating presence. The use of mint as a leading note rather than a supporting player showed an understanding that freshness could anchor an entire composition.
