The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Al Shaza arrived in 2024 as part of Louis Cardin's expanding catalogue of accessible eau de parfums. Al Shaza fits that brief cleanly: a floral woody musk built around a soft, tactile leather accord, balanced between fruity brightness at the top and a grounded patchouli-musk drydown. The fragrance is unisex, designed without a fixed gender in mind. Its structure is straightforward, but the interplay between the rosy, floral heart and the animalic-leather warmth is where it earns its keep. The top opens with a juicy burst of blackcurrant and mandarin, the blackcurrant reading as dark and jammy rather than green-edged, while the mandarin lifts everything with a clean citrus peel brightness that keeps the sweetness from becoming sticky.
What makes Al Shaza structurally interesting is the pivot from a bright fruity-citrus opening into a heart that carries both floral weight and a leather facet, then lands on a patchouli-musk base. The placement of the leather note gives the composition its particular shape. Rather than anchoring the base, it sits in the mid-pyramid, which means the fruit and florals get to sparkle against it before the patchouli grounds everything. The dry woods listed in reference sources fold into that patchouli base, reinforcing an earthy, slightly smoky undertone that runs beneath the whole composition.
The evolution
The first hour is all fruit. Blackcurrant and mandarin arrive sharp and slightly tart, with the blackcurrant leaning toward a jammy, dark sweetness rather than anything green. Within 15 minutes, the rose begins threading through, joined quickly by jasmine that adds a soft, soapy lift. The leather note doesn't announce itself so much as it creaks into the frame, a dry, smoky warmth sitting underneath the florals rather than competing with them. As the citrus recedes, what's left is a layered heart: rose, jasmine, and that quiet leather, the three of them bound together. Patchouli enters next, bringing an earthy depth that pulls the composition down toward the skin. Musk accumulates as the hours pass, softening everything that came before it. Later, the drydown is a warm, close-to-skin mix of patchouli, soft musk, and a ghost of leather.
Cultural impact
Al Shaza is a floral woody musk built around a soft, tactile leather accord, balancing fruity brightness at the top against a grounded patchouli and musk drydown. The blackcurrant and mandarin opening gives it an immediate, accessible energy, the kind of fruity introduction that works across contexts and seasons. From there, the rose and jasmine carry the composition through a heart that feels both classic and approachable, with a leather note threading underneath that adds warmth without tipping into anything heavy.
