The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tellus arrived in 2015 as part of Les Eaux Arborantes, Les Liquides Imaginaires' collection built around arboreal waters, the saps, roots, and subterranean lives of trees. The name itself carries weight, suggesting something grounded and essential. The fragrance was built from earthy notes and Indonesian patchouli, a material that carries deep, organic character. The combination creates something that feels immediate and mineral, capturing the essential quality of soil and earth without metaphor or abstraction. Cashmeran adds softness to the composition, preventing the fragrance from becoming harsh while maintaining its fundamental rawness.
What makes Tellus structurally unusual is the costus-lily pairing at its heart. Costus brings a distinctive character to the composition, creating tension and complexity. The lily note weaves through this, adding a floral dimension that prevents the heart from becoming singular. Together, these materials create a heart that feels layered and intricate. The base leans into ambroxan and labdanum, materials that ground the fragrance in something warm and enduring. The combination extends the earth accord into resinous territory, adding depth and longevity to the overall composition.
The evolution
The opening of Tellus presents mineral and soil notes, immediate and unapologetic. The Indonesian patchouli emerges quickly, bringing its characteristic dark, organic character to the composition. This material carries depth that distinguishes it from cleaner patchouli variations, adding complexity to the fragrance's earthiness. The costus-lily heart follows, introducing green and animalic dimensions that shift the composition's register. This phase brings additional complexity, with moss amplifying the earth accord and lily threading through the mineral and organic elements. As the fragrance develops, ambroxan and fir balsam settle into a resinous drydown that lingers close to the skin. The overall trajectory moves from mineral dampness through organic complexity to warm, resinous depth, creating a fragrance that rewards attention and evolves meaningfully over time.
Cultural impact
Tellus occupies a specific corner of niche perfumery: the earthy-assertive category that appeals to wearers who want their fragrance to make a statement without announcing it. Community reviews consistently cite its autumn-winter suitability and its value for introspective wear, the kind of scent you reach for when you want something that asks something of you rather than simply smelling pleasant. The fragrance resonates with those who appreciate complexity over simplicity, depth over surface appeal.
