The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Geist arrived in 2019 from Lesli Wood Peterson, the Tucson-based perfumer behind La Curie. The name means spirit or ghost in German, a word that carries weight without being heavy. Geist is the house reaching into the space between forest and library, between natural and human-made. Wood Peterson built this one around the idea of damp manuscripts: the smell of old paper left open in a cabin where it rains more than the sun shows itself.
What makes Geist unusual is the chocolate. It's not a dessert note, it's dark, bitter, almost savory, threaded through the forest structure rather than sitting on top of it. The hemlock and fir give it conifer weight. The oakmoss gives it that thick, spongy green that reviewers describe as plush carpet under bare feet. Then ambergris arrives in the drydown, adding mineral depth that keeps everything grounded in something real.
The evolution
The opening hits wet earth and green first, that's the soil tincture and oakmoss asserting themselves. Within minutes the hemlock and fir emerge, giving the composition its conifer backbone. The chocolate doesn't announce itself early; it builds slowly, darkening the palette as the green notes begin to soften. By the heart phase, leather and ink arrive together, this is where Geist becomes its most distinctive, that manuscript quality that reviewers consistently mention. The oakmoss deepens into something plush, almost cushioned. The ambergris stays quiet until the base, where it adds a mineral lift that extends the wear. On most skin, expect 6-8 hours. On dry skin, it pulls closer earlier but the drydown, earth, ink, the quiet ghost of chocolate, can linger into the next day on fabric.
Cultural impact
La Curie has built a following among collectors who seek out independent, narrative-driven fragrances. Geist has earned a reputation as a dark cottage core signature, the scent of damp moss, grey skies, and reading by candlelight. It sits alongside releases like Incendo and Ossuary in a collection that prizes atmosphere over convention.
