The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Damier takes its name from the French word for checkerboard, that geometric pattern of black and white squares found in Parisian architecture, in grand entrance halls, in the spaces of the bathhouse that started everything. The concept is simple: two opposing forces that create something whole when they come together. Black pepper, vibrant, almost sharp, meets milky sandalwood. The Formes & Matières collection has always worked in contrasts and textures, and Damier is a clear expression of that approach: a fragrance built on symmetry, on the idea that the space between black and white holds its own kind of beauty. For the 2022 launch, perfumer Fanny Bal structured the entire composition around this duality, as the core architecture of the scent.
What makes Damier unusual is how directly it commits to its concept. Most fragrances hint at duality. This one builds the entire pyramid around it, black pepper at the top, white musk at the base, with milk and jasmine bridging the gap in the middle. The sandalwood carries a creamy warmth that softens the pepper's edge without eliminating it. The jasmine doesn't compete with the milk, it deepens it. Cashmeran adds a velvety quality that makes the drydown feel like something worn close to the skin rather than projected outward. Cedar and patchouli anchor everything to the woody foundation.
The evolution
The opening announces itself clearly, black pepper and pink pepper together, bright and almost aromatic. There's a crispness to the start that makes the spice feel clean rather than heavy. Within the first thirty minutes, the milk begins to arrive, and the composition shifts. The pepper doesn't disappear, it settles into the background and lets the lactonic warmth take over. The jasmine appears next, soft and almost translucent, blending with the milk to create something that reads as creamy rather than floral. By the second hour, the sandalwood has fully arrived, carrying its characteristic woody-milky signature. The drydown features cedar, patchouli, and white musk creating a close, intimate trail that lasts through the evening. Damier dresses the wearer and stays there, projecting in a way that invites those nearby to discover it rather than announcing itself loudly.
Cultural impact
Damier occupies a specific corner of the niche fragrance world: conceptual compositions that build around an idea rather than a mood or a single note family. The Formes & Matières collection positions each fragrance as a study in a specific material or contrast, and Damier is the collection's most direct execution of that approach. It shares territory with other woody-lactonic fragrances, but Damier's black pepper opening gives it a distinctive character. The fragrance isn't trying to be the loudest in the room. It's trying to be the most coherent.
