The beginning
Not the past. Not the future. Your own life, right now. That's where Ursula Lengling found the spark for What About Me?, a 2022 composition built around a single pointed question aimed squarely at the present tense. The name itself arrives without preamble, a title that asks before you have time to answer. There's no looking backward for meaning here. The composition insists you start where you stand, and it moves with that same urgency from the first spray. You can feel it in the opening: bright, immediate, unapologetic about taking up space in the room. What About Me? doesn't ease you in. It opens like a door you didn't know you'd knocked on, pulling you straight into its own terms.
What About Me? takes its lead from the tension the Lengling house names LENG/LING, a pairing that the brand describes as celebrating vibrancy and indulging desires in equal measure. Here, that tension shows up as contrast. Ume plum, bergamot, and mandarin crack open with that bright fruit bite, sharpened further by a fresh gin accord that pulls juniper through like a thread catching light. Underneath, patchouli and Iso E Super ground the composition, holding the brightness in place while something quieter hums beneath the surface.
The evolution
The first five minutes are almost confrontational. Pepper and mandarin sting bright, ume plum adding a tart sweetness that reads less like fruit than like something sparkling poured into a glass. Within fifteen minutes, the gin accord sharpens further, juniper threading through like tonic water catching light. By the thirty-minute mark, the sharpness softens into sandalwood's warm wood-cream texture, Iso E Super doing its quiet trick of amplifying everything around it. The drydown settles into musk and patchouli, woody and powdery and just slightly dirty in the best sense. Hours later, that base keeps unfolding. Sandalwood's creaminess deepens into something almost amber-like, while patchouli's earthiness gains a faint cocoa edge that wasn't there in the opening.
Cultural impact
What About Me? stands out for its gin-botanical undertone and ume-led opening, a combination that sets it apart from more conventional fruity launches. The ume plum arrives with a tart, almost saline edge that reads closer to a sparkling aperitif than to typical berry accords, and the gin accord threaded through juniper gives the composition a crisp, botanical backbone. Where many fruit-forward fragrances lean sweet and soft, this one holds its shape with that juniper-driven structure, keeping the brightness lifted rather than syrupy.
