The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Shanghai Jazz landed in 2026 as part of LAYR's ongoing exploration of concept-driven compositions, each shaped by a mood or an imagined atmosphere. The composition was developed with perfumer Mathieu Delabre, whose hand brings a restrained, almost architectural clarity to the brief. Where the house's earlier Kyoto Jazz release captured one city, Shanghai Jazz turns to another, chasing a different kind of energy entirely. The reference point isn't sightseeing or postcard imagery. It's something quieter, closer to the texture of daily life, the kind of atmosphere that builds slowly in rooms where people actually spend time. The jazz reference leans into a feeling rather than a genre: improvised, unhurried, confident in its own silence.
What makes this composition quietly unusual is the marriage of oolong tea with a milky, lactonic base. Most fragrances that touch on tea tend to stop at the leaf and the steam, but Shanghai Jazz keeps going, letting the tea steep into a warm, skin-adjacent drydown that reads almost like a dessert that forgot to be sweet. Davana adds a fermented, almost boozy edge to the tangerine opening, which keeps the fruit from reading as simply bright. The transparent florals in the heart are handled with restraint, a choice that lets the apricot and pineapple carry the midphase without competing blooms.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to tangerine and davana, and they arrive as a pair rather than soloists. The tangerine peels open with that familiar candied brightness, but the davana pulls it sideways, giving the citrus a bruised, almost liqueur-soaked quality. There's something almost apricot-adjacent in the davana's sweetness, which means by the time the listed apricot note actually shows up in the heart, the transition feels seamless rather than announced. Pineapple joins quietly, more in texture than in tropical sweetness, adding a clean tartness that keeps the fruit accord from collapsing into jam. The oolong tea threads through everything from the opening onward, never loud, always present.
Cultural impact
Shanghai Jazz reflects LAYR's continued interest in place as a creative starting point, following the house's earlier Kyoto Jazz release with a second city portrait that takes a very different emotional register. Where Kyoto Jazz leaned into the quieter, more contemplative corners of its setting, Shanghai Jazz brings a warmer, more textured energy, built around oolong tea, lactonic warmth, and a fruit-laced opening that reads as humid and lived-in.
