The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Niki is part of the Kimmi Junior collection by Koto Parfums, launched in 2011 in collaboration with Drom Fragrance International. The Kimmi dolls draw their inspiration from Japanese Kokeshi dolls of the 19th century. Niki is one of three dolls in the line, each paired with a distinct fragrance composition. For Niki, perfumer Delphine Jelk chose strawberry sorbet as her olfactory portrait. The scent opens with bright, sun-ripened strawberry that carries a juicy sweetness balanced by subtle citrus accents. As it settles, creamy undertones emerge, giving the fragrance a soft, melt-in-your-mouth quality reminiscent of the frozen dessert after a few spoonfuls have softened.
What makes this composition interesting is how it balances tart and sweet without tipping into candy. The strawberry leaf note is the pivot point, green, slightly metallic, it keeps the raspberry and vanilla honest. Without it, you'd have a standard fruity floral. With it, there's a brightness that feels more like biting into a real strawberry than drinking strawberry syrup. Peony does the heavy lifting in the heart, offering body without the aggressive sweetness of rose or the cloying nature of tuberose. It's a workhorse floral that people sleep on.
The evolution
The opening hits like a frozen fruit pop on a hot day, pomelo's citrus bite cutting through the sweetness of strawberry leaf. Thirty minutes in, the peony blooms and the whole thing softens, becoming something warmer and closer to the skin. The raspberry is more of a suggestion here, a fruity undertone rather than a statement. By hour two, vanilla and musk take over, and the fragrance becomes skin-like, intimate, the kind of scent you'd catch on a pillowcase. It doesn't project far, but that's the point. This is a scent that stays where you put it.
Cultural impact
Niki exists in a specific corner of fragrance culture: the space between children's perfumes and adult compositions. It's sweet enough to appeal to a younger sensibility, but the peony and vanilla keep it from being purely juvenile. The fragrance occupies an interesting middle ground where fruity sweetness meets floral elegance. Strawberry and raspberry provide the immediate appeal, bright and inviting, while peony adds structure and depth that elevates the composition beyond simple fruit. Vanilla grounds the scent with warmth, preventing it from feeling overly light or fleeting.
