Why it exists.
The beginning
Tonka arrived in 2016 as part of Kokeshi's single-note series, an expansion beyond the pop-art collaborations with Jeremy Scott that launched the brand two years prior. Where Litchee and Cheery wore their influences loudly, Tonka turned inward, taking a single ingredient and asking what it could say without shouting. The perfumers chose Venezuelan tonka bean for its warmth and restraint, then built the composition around it rather than on top of it. Air and bergamot open clean, white cedar provides structure in the heart, and the tonka anchors everything that follows.
Tonka's trick is the ozonic accord in the opening. It doesn't smell like ocean or hotel lobby, it smells like air after rain, when the atmosphere is charged but calm. That freshness carries through the heart notes, preventing the tonka bean from settling into powdery sweetness too quickly. White cedar is the middle voice here, quiet and woodsy, neither sharp nor heavy. Together, the three layers create something that reads as both warm and clean, which sounds simple but requires careful balance to execute without contradiction.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly, bergamot and mountain air hit clean and bright. For the first 15 minutes, this smells like the outside of a scent. Airy. Alert. Not aggressive, just present. Around the 30-minute mark, the woody notes begin to surface. White cedar takes over without fanfare, softening the citrus edge and setting up what comes next. The real story happens on the skin, where the tonka bean slowly reveals itself. Not sharp coumarin, warm, close, almost worn-in. The sweetness doesn't build so much as deepen, settling into something cozy and intimate rather than loud. By the 4-hour mark, the tonka holds the composition. Warm. Quiet. Lingers close to the skin for a full workday on most people.
Cultural impact
Tonka occupies comfortable territory in the woody-aquatic space. Those familiar with JPG Le Male's tonka base may recognize a kinship, this is a familiar accord, executed cleanly. It's the kind of fragrance that wears easily and gets reached for regularly without ceremony. It has found a loyal audience among those seeking understated daily wear.
