Why it exists.
The beginning
Royal Blue arrived in 2024 from King of Kings as part of the brand's Royal series, a collection of oriental compositions with an opulent, statement-making sensibility. Royal Blue leans into that opulence but pulls it in a cooler, creamier, more structured direction than you might expect from the family. The coconut note sits at the heart, wrapped by iris, cypress, and ginger. Instead of reading tropical or sugary, the combination comes off like a sharply dressed escape, something tailored rather than sun-soaked. The iris powder cools the composition, cypress adds a resinous snap up top, and ginger threads a clean heat through the cream. On skin, it earns its keep beyond any decorative appeal a bottle might suggest, projecting enough to register without ever overwhelming the room.
Coconut is a tricky material to anchor a composition around, and King of Kings handles it with intention here. The note is present both in the opening and the heart, which keeps the cream from fading before the fragrance has a chance to build. Iris brackets one side of the coconut, its powdery, cool character softening any sweetness that might tip too far into confection. Ambergris anchors the other side, lending a subtle marine undertone that keeps the composition from feeling one-dimensional.
The evolution
The opening belongs to ginger and cypress, a bright, slightly green edge that registers before the coconut fully arrives. Iris shows up early too, powdery and cool, and it lingers longer than you might expect from a supporting note, staying visible well into the first stretch of wear. As the heart settles, the composition shifts into something quieter: coconut softened by woodsy notes, less sharp, more rounded. The sweetness mellows into something almost milky, losing the sharper edges of the opening. Eventually, sandalwood and ambergris take over the conversation. The drydown is warm, with tonka bean adding a soft vanillic sweetness underneath the sandalwood. The base clings close to skin in the later hours, comfortable rather than demanding, and what's left on clothes the next morning is mostly the sandalwood and a faint amber warmth. Clean, close, and easy to live with.
