The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Isola is a district in Milan, part of the Scent of Milan collection that traces the city's districts one fragrance at a time. Isola District arrived in 2024, joining Montenapoleone and Navigli, each one a different street corner of the same city. The neighborhood is known for its maze of narrow streets, easy to get lost in, worth the detour. The fragrance opens with a berry-davana pairing. Blueberry reads first, bright and distinct, then blackberry underneath with more texture. Davana brings a camphorated, slightly medicinal sweetness that sets this apart from typical fruity-floral constructions. Something with a pulse, unexpected but coherent, a fragrance that captures the energy of a neighborhood where contrasts coexist.
What makes Isola District interesting is the combination of notes. Berry sweetness in an opening is familiar territory, but davana brings something less expected. This herb carries a camphorated, slightly medicinal sweetness that most berry florals never risk. The cistus absolute, or labdanum, in the base provides the quiet foundation here. Less dramatic than oud or amber, but it offers persistence and warmth.
The evolution
The opening introduces berries and davana together. Blueberry reads first, bright and distinct, then blackberry underneath with more texture and a slight tart edge. Davana brings its camphorated, herbal character that adds complexity rather than sweetness. If you've never smelled it: think sage crossed with something herbal and distinctive. Intriguing, with an exotic quality that rewards attention. By the time the florals take over, rose softens the opening's brightness. Ylang-ylang adds a waxy, tropical warmth that pushes the composition toward a different register. This is the heart, the longest phase of the fragrance. The drydown is where the cedar makes its presence known. Warm, slightly balsamic, the labdanum keeps the composition grounded while the wood anchors it. The fragrance fades to skin level over time, maintaining presence without becoming overwhelming.
Cultural impact
Isola District extends Kiko Milano's approach to creating accessible fragrance options. The davana note brings character to the composition, lending it a slightly challenging quality that rewards attention. This approach suggests that fragrance at this price point can offer conceptual interest without relying on formulaic approaches. The Isola District name evokes a specific urban geography, connecting the scent to a particular sense of place and identity rather than a traditional perfume archetype.
