The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Notes of Chardonnay Reserve arrived in 2016, joining the Kelly & Jones lineup as a Reserve expression of the original Chardonnay composition. Kelly Jones built her collection around the aromatic profiles of specific grape varietals, bottling the scent character of each one. Buttery, creamy, oaked, Chardonnay is the white wine people reach for when they want comfort over complexity. The Reserve version holds onto that core identity while adding extra layers of depth and warmth. Notes of Chardonnay Reserve was launched in 2016 as an evolution within the Chardonnay family, concentrating the toasted oak and roasted character that the grape varietal is known for. It deepens the original's profile, pushing the wood-forward facets further into focus.
What sets this composition apart from a straightforward gourmand is the structural presence of the oak. The roasted oak and vetiver carry the composition's spine, giving it a firm, grounded architecture. The crème brûlée note reads as caramelized sugar, yes, but it sits against a smoky, almost mineral backdrop that keeps the sweetness in check. The oak note threads through the top and the base, providing a consistent woodiness that prevents the vanilla and caramel from tipping into pure dessert territory.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes are almost playful. Honeydew melon and bergamot lift things up before the vanilla flower and crème brûlée settle in. Sweet, yes, but not childish. The smoke arrives quietly somewhere around the one-hour mark, and the oak starts to assert itself, turning the drydown woody and warm rather than sugary. Vetiver and patchouli anchor the base, keeping the sweetness from floating away. By hour four, what's left on skin reads almost entirely as roasted oak and vanilla blossom, a quiet, smoky warmth. It doesn't project aggressively, but it stays close to the wearer through the evening hours, holding its shape without becoming a skin scent too quickly. The roasted oak remains prominent well into the late drydown, paired with the soft creaminess of vanilla flower and a faint trace of crème brûlée's caramelized edge.
Cultural impact
Notes of Chardonnay Reserve speaks to wearers who think about what they drink with the same attention others give to what they wear. It rewards a kind of sensory literacy, the ability to pick out honeydew melon, bergamot, and crème brûlée in a single wear, to follow the roasted oak as it asserts itself through the drydown. The fragrance invites slow attention, asking to be revisited rather than sprayed and forgotten. It belongs at the table, in the kind of evening where the wine gets discussed as carefully as the food, and the scent on your skin becomes part of the conversation.
