The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Notes of Cabernet Reserve is the heavier, more shadowed sibling in Kelly Jones's original wine-inspired collection. Where the standard Notes of Cabernet reads bright and approachable, the Reserve version goes deeper into what a serious glass of the real thing actually smells like after the first sip. The brief was simple: take the grape's aromatic profile, push it past fruit, and find the leather and resin underneath. The brand's own note describes it precisely: a wine bar on 4th Avenue, candlelight, two glasses poured, peppercorn and black cherry staining the lips. That moment is the composition. It's a fragrance built around a specific kind of evening intimacy, the kind where conversation does most of the work and scent just sets the temperature.
What makes the Reserve stand apart is the restraint. It refuses to lean on obvious grape-derived sweetness, and the result feels deliberate rather than reductive. Kelly Jones leans on a structure of Haitian vetiver for earth, tobacco blossom for that bruised floral warmth, and immortelle for the maple-syrup-meets-curry sweetness that real Cabernet develops as it breathes. Black cherry and black pepper do the obvious work at the surface, but the frankincense, leather, and immortelle underneath are what give it dimension. The interplay between these materials is what carries the composition.
The evolution
Inspired by the Cabernet Reserve pour, the opening leans into the wine's dark fruit and peppery edge with black cherry and a measured dose of pink and black pepper. As the scent settles, the oaky, resinous middle of the wine is mirrored through frankincense, immortelle, and supple leather. The drydown drifts into tobacco blossom and Haitian vetiver, echoing the lingering wood and earth on the palate long after the glass is empty.
Cultural impact
Cabernet Reserve occupies a specific corner of the fragrance world: the wine-as-scent niche rendered with genuine seriousness. It sits closer to a spiced, resinous oriental than to any mainstream fruity-floral, which makes it a quieter, more committed choice. The kind of thing you wear when you want the room to lean in, not step back. The opening reads as expected: black cherry, a sharp hit of black pepper, the immediate impression of a glass just poured. But within minutes the resin notes begin to rise, and the composition shifts into something more contemplative and layered.
