The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jusbox has built its identity on translating musical movements into scent. For Cheeky Smile, the house turned to acid house, the electronic genre known for its bright, repetitive textures and underground energy. Dominique Moellhausen was tasked with capturing this sonic quality in liquid form. Working with V-Monkeys, she selected materials that could evoke the genre's characteristic clarity and warmth in equal measure.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of using high-impact aroma chemicals as building blocks rather than relying on conventional naturals. Iso E Super and Ambrocenide function as the opening chords, creating immediate recognition through their transparent, cedar-like character. Amber Core and Amber Xtreme provide the warmth that acid house demands. Cashmeran acts as the bridge between the synthetic and the sensory, offering musky softness that makes the composition feel familiar despite its modernist construction.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with the crisp, almost electric presence of Ambrocenide paired with the textured cedar of Iso E Super, immediately establishing a modern, elevated atmosphere reminiscent of early morning light in a warehouse setting. As the composition develops, Ambroxan and Amber Core introduce a warm, mineral character that grounds the brightness without diminishing it. The drydown with Amber Xtreme and Cashmeran represents the final track of the musical metaphor, where the rhythm settles into something personal and intimate, heard only by those close enough to listen.
Cultural impact
Cheeky Smile occupies a particular space in the fragrance world: the synthetic-woody amber that sits somewhere between accessible and challenging. It draws comparisons to Escentric Molecules' Molecule 01 and Baccarat Rouge 540, fragrances that inspire strong opinions and devoted followings. The bottle glows in the dark, creating a visual element that sets it apart from conventional fragrance presentation. For those interested in ambroxan and Iso E Super as specific materials with distinctive properties, the fragrance offers a focused study in how these components function in a composed blend rather than in isolation.
