The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Qahua Bunga was born from a single provocation: what if an ultra-gourmand house turned its hand to something darker? The perfumer reached instead for Italian coffee, the kind that grounds the morning with its unmistakable depth. The name carries the idea forward. Qahua nods to coffee's essence while Bunga, flower in Malay and Indonesian, suggests the sweetness waiting beneath the bitter surface. The notes deliver exactly that collision, dark and aromatic up top, with an unexpected floral sweetness that emerges as the fragrance develops, creating a tension between strength and softness that defines the entire composition.
What makes Qahua Bunga distinct is its restraint at the top, where coffee takes center stage without the usual sugar rush. Instead, melon and kiwi introduce a watery sweetness that reads almost ozonic. The kiwi especially, tart, bright, slightly green, prevents the whole thing from settling into familiar gourmand territory. Tobacco bridges the gap between the dark top and the cool base, adding body without heaviness. Then mint tea arrives.
The evolution
Italian coffee hits first, dark and immediate, that slightly oily bitterness at the edge of a well-brewed cup. The melon arrives, translucent sweetness that lifts the whole opening, stops it from becoming too heavy. The kiwi follows, bright and effervescent, cutting through the dark with a tartness that feels almost citrus-adjacent. This is the fragrance's most surprising window, where the tropical fruits temper the coffee's intensity while maintaining an overall sense of boldness. The tobacco moves in, not smoky, not harsh, but warm and dry, adding depth to the composition. The mint tea gradually becomes the dominant presence as the fragrance dries down: cool, clean, slightly herbal, staying close to the skin but refusing to disappear. The overall evolution shows a careful choreography of notes, each one emerging and receding in a way that keeps the wearer engaged throughout the wear.
Cultural impact
Qahua Bunga arrived in 2022 as an intriguing entry in the Jousset catalog. Coffee as a fragrance note has deep roots in niche perfumery, but the melon-kiwi top and mint tea base gave Qahua Bunga an unusual aromatic freshness that separates it from darker coffee precedents. The combination of familiar coffee warmth with unexpected tropical fruit notes and a clean herbal dry down creates something that feels both grounded in tradition and distinctly modern. This blend of aromatic elements positions the fragrance as a unique proposition within the coffee fragrance category.
