The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Christine Nagel created Elderflower & Gooseberry in 2013 as part of Jo Malone London's Sugar & Spice collection, a limited edition of five dessert-inspired fragrances. The concept was rooted in British culinary tradition elderflower cordial made from hedgerow blossoms, gooseberry tarts and crumbles from the garden. Nagel translated these familiar, domestic pleasures into wearable compositions, pairing the green tartness of gooseberry with the delicate floral sweetness of black elder and the tropical lift of lychee. The result felt simultaneously nostalgic and modern, rooted in English countryside tradition but touched by something unexpected. Sugar & Spice launched in spring 2013 as a seasonal limited edition, capturing the period when British hedgerows turn green and the first elderflowers begin to bloom.
What makes this composition interesting is the deliberate tension between tart and sweet. Gooseberry delivers that sharp, green acidity the kind that makes your mouth water before your brain catches up. Lychee softens the blow with its watery, almost translucent sweetness. Then black elder the actual flower of the elder tree, not the berry pulls everything toward something quietly floral. The combination avoids the obvious. It's not a fruit salad. It's more like the moment you realize the berries in your glass of cordial are the same ones growing outside your door. That translation from garden to skin is where Nagel's intent lives.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately. Gooseberry is bright, green, and tart with an almost physical snap. Within two minutes, lychee arrives and sweetens the equation without drowning it. The transition is swift and clean. By the ten-minute mark, black elder takes over and the whole thing softens into something waxy, delicate, and quietly floral. The sharp edges retreat. What remains is a pleasant, daytime sweetness that sits close to the skin. The drydown is subtle. Elderflower lingers close and intimate, fading gradually over four to six hours on most skin types. It never becomes heavy or cloying. The arc is clean: bright entrance, softened middle, quiet exit.
Cultural impact
Elderflower & Gooseberry belongs to Jo Malone London's tradition of translating British culinary and countryside traditions into wearable compositions. As part of the 2013 Sugar & Spice collection, it sits alongside Lemon Tart, Redcurrant & Cream, Ginger Biscuit, and Bitter Orange & Chocolate, each inspired by dessert rather than a specific place or person. The fragrance appeals to wearers who want something bright and non-performative, a cologne that whispers. Its elderflower note gives it quiet distinction without loud presence.
