The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
When Josh Meyer conceived The Soft Lawn for Imaginary Authors in 2012, his goal was to translate the unmistakable atmosphere of a Portland tennis court into liquid form. Rather than relying on conventional green materials, Meyer looked to the specific sensory markers of the sport itself, the crisp snap of the ball, the crushed ivy along the court's edge, the oakmoss growing on the surrounding trees. The fragrance became less a perfume and more a sensory record of a specific place and moment.
The note philosophy here prioritizes atmosphere over structure. Each heart note represents a specific sensory marker from that Portland tennis court: Linden Blossom for the summer air, Tennis Ball for the game's equipment, Ivy and Oakmoss for the verdant surroundings, Bay Leaf for the garden quality of the environment, and Vetiver for the earth beneath the court. These are not blended arbitrarily; they are composed to evoke a place rather than tell a linear story.
The evolution
The journey of The Soft Lawn begins immediately in its heart phase, skipping any traditional opening entirely. Linden Blossom arrives first, its honeyed sweetness softened by the green materials surrounding it. Tennis Ball provides the initial shock of recognition before the deeper heart notes of Ivy, Oakmoss, and Bay Leaf expand outward. Vetiver serves as the persistent anchor, keeping the composition grounded even as the green florals fade. Without a drydown phase defined by separate materials, the heart notes simply attenuate together over hours until only a quiet moss-and-root residue remains on skin.
Cultural impact
Since its debut, The Soft Lawn has resonated with a niche of fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate literary‑inspired storytelling through scent. Its green‑synthetic profile captures the paradox of nature and sport, prompting discussions about modern masculinity and nostalgia for outdoor leisure. The fragrance has been cited in numerous blog essays as a case study in how narrative can shape olfactory perception, influencing a generation of indie perfumers to embed storytelling into their creations, thereby expanding the cultural dialogue around scent as a medium for personal and collective memory.
