The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Joker comes from IM:SOLE, a fragrance house that approaches its compositions as distinct characters with their own identities. Within that framework, the fragrance is part of The Play collection. The official copy that accompanies the launch is direct and unfiltered, carrying a phrase that reads, in its raw form, as something close to a dare: dark red nose on, in the dark world. That phrasing sets the tone for everything that follows. Florian Gallo is credited as the perfumer, and the juice he built reads as a fragrance that refuses to behave the way most fruity-chypre compositions are expected to behave. There's no gentle overture, no polite fade into nothing.
What makes The Joker structurally unusual is the ratio: a bright, almost playful top built on blackcurrant, pineapple, and citrus, stacked against a base that's almost aggressively serious. Patchouli, ambergris, and oakmoss anchor the composition in territory that recalls classic chypre construction, heavy on the moss and earth rather than the modern fruity-muscle base. The heart of pine, cypress, and rose is where the tension actually lives, a green, resinous middle that refuses to behave like the opening suggests.
The evolution
The opening is loud, almost cheerfully so. Blackcurrant smacks the air, pineapple cuts through it with something sharp and tropical, and the whole thing reads as a bright, fruity introduction that doesn't hold back. Then the cypress arrives, and the green creeps in from the sides. The rose is there but it's not a typical floral rose, it's a rose stripped of sweetness, leaning into something darker and more austere, the way a dried petal might smell if you'd left it pressed between old book pages rather than fresh. Pine dominates the heart phase, giving the composition a raw, sappy, almost turpentine edge that would feel out of place in a softer fragrance. The resinous quality is unmistakable, a kind of green sharpness that sits somewhere between a Christmas tree and a workshop.
Cultural impact
The Joker sits within IM:SOLE's The Play collection, a lineup organized around characters and archetypes rather than traditional gender coding. The composition's structure is what makes it memorable: an opening that flirts with brightness through blackcurrant and pineapple, then commits to a bitter, mossy base built on patchouli, oakmoss, and ambergris. That contrast between a cheerful fruit top and an almost confrontational earthy base is the kind of construction that polarizes rather than pleases everyone. It reads as the kind of fragrance someone chooses when they want to be remembered, not just smelled.
