The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
No. 16 arrived in 2019 as half of a diptych, the second couple in Henry Jacques's Les Toupies collection. The maison introduced the pair, No. 16 and No. 81, as new characters adding dimension to what the house calls a magical story of life and romance. Two years of exploration led to this release, marking a new creative impulse for the house. Rooted in classical haute parfumerie but unconstrained by its traditional rules, the composition leans on lesser-known ingredients arranged in intricate, balanced layers. Each accord seems to negotiate quietly with the next, building a structure that feels architectural rather than ornamental. The result is a modern perfume, expressive rather than nostalgic, wearing its refinement lightly.
What makes No. 16 worth attention is its quiet refusal to perform. The white musk and ambrette do the heavy structural work, but the composition never reads as a musk soliflore. Tuscan iris and ylang-ylang pull the powder in opposite directions, one cool and mineral, the other creamy and sun-warmed, while May rose and gardenia add a green-soaked floral lift that keeps the whole thing from sinking into abstraction. It's a balancing act between skin intimacy and floral presence, and the restraint is the point.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes belong to the green, dewy side of gardenia, waxy and almost humid, with ylang-ylang's banana-skin sweetness threading through underneath. It reads lighter than it is, almost sheer, until the Tuscan iris begins to assert itself. That shift is the hinge of the whole composition. The powder arrives not as a cloud but as a film, settling over the florals like talc on warm skin. Ambrette, the seed musk, works underneath everything, lending a clean, slightly nutty warmth that keeps the powder from turning dry or dusty. By the second hour the florals have receded, and what remains is a sculpted musk-iris skeleton, close, warm, surprisingly persistent. On fabric the next morning, it smells like the inside of a well-kept coat. The drydown holds for hours beyond the initial arc, soft, intimate, and notably difficult to wash off.
Cultural impact
No. 16 holds a distinctive place within the Les Toupies diptych, paired with No. 81 to form a creative pairing that expands the maison's narrative around life and romance. The diptych format itself sets the fragrance apart, inviting wearers to experience two compositions in conversation with one another rather than as standalone releases. The house's signature flacon design and its world of limited, carefully considered editions give the fragrance a sense of occasion, an object meant to be discovered and returned to over time. For those drawn to the maison's broader universe, No.
