The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ma Liberté, French for my freedom, was conceived as a personal ode to liberty on the brand's tenth anniversary. Perfumers Armin Haas and Geoffrey Nejman set out in 2014 to capture that feeling in scent, choosing nutmeg's daring spice and lily-of-the-valley's crisp bloom as the opening duo. The heart of caramel was chosen to represent warmth and indulgence, while ambergris, white musk, and sandalwood anchor the composition in something timeless and free-spirited. This is fragrance as autobiography, each note a chapter in a story about breaking conventions.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of contrast. Nutmeg and lily of the valley might seem an unusual pairing, yet their juxtaposition creates an opening that is both invigorating and graceful. Caramel bridges the gap between this initial boldness and the ultimately calm drydown, functioning as a transitional warmth that makes the base's ambergris and white musk feel earned rather than sudden. Sandalwood, positioned at the very end, provides the final impression with its quiet, lasting presence. Each note has a deliberate role in the larger composition, supporting the fragrance's central theme of personal liberation.
The evolution
The opening with nutmeg and lily of the valley establishes an immediate tension between spice and freshness. Nutmeg contributes a sharp, almost medicinal warmth while lily of the valley counters with its characteristic green sweetness. As the fragrance evolves, caramel takes over smoothly, replacing the initial sharpness with a cozy, sweet richness that signals the heart's arrival. The drydown begins with ambergris adding a marine, slightly animalic dimension before white musk provides softness and sandalwood delivers its characteristic creamy woodiness. The wearer experiences a full arc from daring first impression to settled, Intimate warmth.
Cultural impact
Since its 2014 debut, Ma Liberté has become a quiet favorite among collectors who appreciate Haas Parfum’s narrative‑driven releases. Its spicy‑floral character often draws comparisons to the house’s earlier numbered editions, yet its caramel heart sets it apart, earning it a spot on niche‑fragrance forums as a scent that feels both nostalgic and modern.
