The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Lesedi La Rona IV takes its name from the historic rough diamond Graff acquired in 2017. Translating that into fragrance meant finding a different kind of warmth, not the expected amber-and-vanilla Oriental, but something that captured a different quality of brilliance. Stephen Nilsen worked with Givaudan to build a composition around manuka honey, tonka bean, and sweet almond, anchoring it with Brazilian coffee absolute. The result is an edible Oriental that balances richness with restraint, a scent that speaks softly while making its presence known. The honey brings a natural golden sweetness that feels almost sun-warmed, while the tonka bean adds a soft, vanillic quality that rounds the edges.
The Lesedi La Rona collection spans six scents, each representing a different facet of the diamond. With IV, the focus is warmth, the quality of light refracting through clarity into something amber and honeyed. Manuka honey brings a distinctive floral richness, different from the familiar sweetness of traditional honey accords. Its profile is more complex, more aromatic, with a hint of resinous warmth that sets it apart. Tonka bean adds the coumarin warmth of slightly underripe fruit, that characteristic sweet-tobacco softness that feels both fresh and comforting.
The evolution
The opening hits with Bulgarian lavender and Italian lemon, a bright, almost astringent wave that reads cool and clean. The lemon peel quality some wearers identify arrives here, sharp and citrusy, before the lavender softens and white rose appears. Within twenty minutes, the heart takes over. Manuka honey and tonka bean arrive together, sweet and golden, and the sweet almond note begins to build, adding layers of nutty complexity. The coffee absolute waits until the honey and tonka start to fade, arriving as a quiet roasted warmth that extends the wearer's experience of the fragrance. The sillage stays moderate throughout, close to the skin, never loud, but present for hours as the composition slowly unfolds and evolves on the skin, revealing new facets as time passes.
Cultural impact
Graff entered the fragrance space with the Lesedi La Rona collection, translating the house's dedication to exceptional stones into a wearable form. At luxury price points, this appeals to the collector who already knows. The scent invites discovery, rewarding attention with its layered complexity and quiet confidence. Rather than announcing itself, it reveals itself gradually, matching the pace of those who appreciate refinement over spectacle.
