The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Givenchy's Play line began in 2010 as an exploration of modern femininity, fragrances that moved differently than the house's more formal signatures. Play For Her Eau de Toilette arrived in September 2013 as the more vivid, more playful chapter of that story. Where the original leaned into depth, this edition opened wider, brighter, inviting the wearer into something lighter without sacrificing Givenchy's couture sensibility. The brief was simple: capture joie de vivre in a bottle. The result was a fruit-forward floral that felt both accessible and unmistakably Givenchy.
What makes Play For Her EDT structurally interesting is how it handles sweetness. The white currant and wild peach open with a tartness that prevents the fragrance from feeling syrupy, it's fruity in the way a just-picked berry is fruity, not candied. The licorice blossom in the heart doesn't announce itself as anise or black licorice candy. Instead, it softens the iris, adding a faint anisic warmth that rounds the floral into something moreish. Amyris wood, present across the entire Play collection, anchors everything with its mild, milky-woody character, never heavy, always present.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly: white currant's sharp-fruity note hits first, followed by the rounder sweetness of wild peach. The iris soon begins to assert itself, pulling the composition toward powdery territory. The licorice threads through as a subtle sweet-anisic undertone that prevents the iris from becoming too classic or too grandmother. As the fragrance develops, the amyris wood settles in, creating a soft, close, slightly sweet woody-musk. There's no dramatic sillage explosion, this is a moderate fragrance that stays intimate, becoming a skin-scent rather than a room-filler. The scent evolves gradually on the skin, revealing its facets over time without rushing through its phases. What remains in its dry-down is a gentle musk that lingers close to the wearer, inviting those nearby to lean in rather than announcing itself from across the room.
Cultural impact
Play For Her EDT arrived as part of Givenchy's broader fragrance collection, offering a fruity-floral character built around white currant and wild peach. The composition incorporates powdery iris and amyris wood, creating a scent profile that balances brightness with depth. Iris brings its distinctive powdery quality to the heart of the fragrance, lending an almost atmospheric quality to the overall composition. The amyris wood in the base provides warmth and substance, grounding the fruitier top notes and preventing the scent from becoming too light or fleeting.
